The Great Migration

in Tanzania & Kenya

Summary of our safari programs.

The great Serengeti and Masai Mara wildebeest migration.

1.500.000 wildebeest, 300.000 zebra's, 300.000 thomson gazelles en 30.000 grant gazelles move clockwise through the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. They form an impressive spectacle in this area of 27.000 square kilometer which  should not be missed during your safari.

Their 1.000 km long journey starts in February/March with the calving of the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti, the place where, within a period of 2-3 weeks, 400.000 wildebeest are born. From that moment the herds move to the western  Serengeti to cross the Grumeti river in June. In Augustus / September the giant herds arrive in the Kenyan Masai Mara. From November they move to the southern part of the Serengeti where the zebra's calve in December.

The Great Migration the whole year around:

March	Area between the Serengeti NP and the Ngorongoro CA.
April	The herds move to the central Serengeti.
May	Move north in the direction of the western corridor following the Mbalageti river to the Grumeti river. This area has many natural hurdles in the form of hills and streams.
June	Crossing of the Grumeti river in the western corridor.
July	Move further north to the Grumeti controlled area. A small part moves to the Lobo area.
Augustus	In the Ikorongo controlled area.
September	Crossing the Mara river in the Masai Mara in Kenya.
October	In the Masai Mara in Kenya.
November	Moving from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti.
December	Zebra calving in the south east of the Serengeti on the great plains.
January	Zebra calving in the area between the Serengeti NP en de Ngorongoro CA.

Please note that the migration moves with the rainfall. Therefore above schedule is an indication only.

Your guide will know, based on his previous safaris in the area which are sometimes no more then 2 weeks old, where to take you to make you enjoy this spectacle.

Any time of the year, whether the Migration is in the Masai Mara in Kenya or in the Serengeti in Tanzania, you can chose a route which takes you to the Migration.

A tent safari is very suited because you are not tied to a fixed hotel scheme. We can arrange you to camp close to the migration, leaving flexibility to move with the herds because you travel with all equipment necessary for camping in the bush.

If you decide to stay longer in a national park, simply because it is so beautiful you can simply do so. Remember, it is your Prive safari!

From May up to October you can start your safari from Arusha -Tanzania or from Nairobi - Kenya

With the Adventurous Prive you are able to change the parks in the route even during the safari, so that your guide can anticipate changes in the migration.

From Arusha you can continue to the east coast, Pemba or Zanzibar, to relax at a beach after this safari.

In the other months you can also start your safari from Arusha.

In those months the migration is in the eastern or southern part of the Serengeti.
